About

Event Information

For more than 100 years, The American Cancer Society has been leading the fight to end cancer. With your support, we have helped usher in an era where more people survive cancer than ever before. By translating our research findings into action, we’ve seen a 20% decline in US cancer death rates since the early 1990’s. We invite you to join us on November 2, 2024, for The Portland Hope Gala at The Benson in our ongoing effort to put an end to cancer.

Leadership

Kylie Tacheny

Event Chair

Kylie is a dedicated volunteer with the American Cancer Society, contributing her time and efforts for many years. With 16 years of experience as a local insurance agent, she has developed a deep connection with her community. The profound impact of cancer on her loved ones has fueled her passion to make a difference. Kylie’s primary goal is to actively participate in fundraising for the American Cancer Society, supporting their mission to fund life-saving research and assist individuals and families facing the challenges of cancer. Her commitment reflects a genuine desire to contribute to the well-being of those affected by cancer.

Kiersten Shaw

Co-Chair

Kiersten has been a Board Member of the American Cancer Society for three years, focusing most of her efforts on the Portland Hope Gala. Before ACS, she was on the Board of Directors for the Oregon & SW Washington Ronald McDonald House Charities for ten years. The effect that cancer has had on her immediate family and friends inspires her to work to end cancer as we know it for everyone. She feels honored to be part of this organization whose mission and values align with hers and is passionate about helping those impacted by cancer survive and thrive!

Our Mission

Mission Funding: Pediatric Cancer

After accidents, cancer is the second leading cause of death in children ages 1 to 14. Because of major treatment advances in recent decades, 85% of children with cancer now survive 5 years or more. Still, survival rates can vary a great deal depending on the type of cancer and other factors. The American Cancer Society uses a comprehensive approach to working to end childhood cancer as we know it, for everyone, by leveraging our unique strengths in funding the best research; publishing the most current trends in childhood cancer occurrence and survival; providing information on symptoms, early detection, treatment and support for children with cancer and their families; and working to improve the quality of life for childhood cancer patients and survivors.
